Microsoft is at it again.  They are in the alpha version of a thing called "Popfly".  It is supposed to be a tool for people to build mashups, gadgets and web pages and share those resources with others.  On the surface it sounds a little useless, but when you look a little deeper, it has the power to really be a serious service.  First, you should watch the Popfly screencast at:

http://www.popfly.ms/Overview/Default.aspx

The first part of the video just seems a bit fluffy, it is nice to know it is built with Silverlight, there is a lot of power there.  I would like to have all their controls :).

After a bit, the linking of blocks kind of reminds me of Biztalk server or even the old dream of COM.  You simply have blocks of functionality and you link them together.  It is interesting how you can link those blocks together by combining multiple blocks as a data source to feed a another block.  That was pretty cool, even though the linkage was Javascript.

The sharing aspect is a different world from my mindset.  The open forum where people can modify and build new blocks out of your parts and then share those could really end up with some power down the road.  I am sure there are commercial aspects in there somewhere, but as just an open community, it will be interesting to see what comes down the road.

After watching the integration with Visual Studio, I can see where this would have great potential on corporate intranets with the power of collaboration.  Having a good collection of functionality blocks could offer a great deal of services for the employees.  It could take some of the workload of the developers in the corporation for custom reports and data mining.

Of course, in my world, I wonder where the commercial aspects of this come into play.  Developing and providing blocks, applications, web page enhancements?  What about a payment system, who would you handle licensing, marketing, etc?  It is alpha and I am sure this questions will come up later down the road.

It is good to see what can be down with Silverlight and be cross platform!
